A surf camp in Indonesia isn't the first place I'd think of looking for inspiration when it comes to performance coaching, but it would appear that I'm out of touch with this ancient 'sport of kings'!
Visiting my daughter who is working at a surf camp in Lombok, I took the opportunity to sit in on an evening lecture given by the head coach, which covered 'visioning techniques' and 'personal resilience'. Apart from the random interruption from inquisitive monkeys, I could have been sitting in on a discussion at East Down!
What struck me about this discussion was not so much the relevance of these subjects to surfing (though this was very clear), but their relevance to personal performance in all walks of life.
Personal Resilience, as a concept, is not at all new. Indeed it has always been a golden thread in our approach to personal development and leadership, but it is now becoming a core topic in its own right and I'm encouraged by how seriously it is taken across all the industry sectors that we touch - from construction to banking to the public sector.
Perhaps I should not have been so surprised to come across it in a country that practices Yoga as a way of life and in a sport where both physical and mental fitness, and a positive mental attitude, have always been seen as essential to success.

After months of careful planning, the TiA team finally boarded a plane for Florida, to deliver a series of Forum Theatre interventions at a prestigious Leadership Team conference in Miami.
